Goals for September 2016

Better late than never

I got sidetracked and did not get the chance to make a post about my goals for September last week. Due to this delay I will combine the usual Tuesday post with my goals. I have a few goals ranging from personal to professional. Personal goals are all about self improvement and making changes in my life. Professional goals are about skills development and work.

Professional Goals

I want to improve my skills with JavaScript. I will be using the Unit Converter mini project to learn and refresh my JavaScript skills. This project will make use of JavaScript for converting units across multiple input fields as well as some other things that are currently in the planning stages.

My long term professional goal is to find work as a web developer by the end of the year. In order to accomplish this goal I will tackling various projects to spruce up my portfolio. I will also try to get out of my comfort zone and find clients from local business without websites. I will approach these clients offering them my services on setting up a business website.

Personal Goals

I feel that I too often will take a non-confrontational approach to a situation and let others make the decisions for me. This would often be a sticking point in me regretting something for not speaking up. I want to be more free in the choices I make and be responsible for those choices. In order to accomplish this goal I will be making an effort to make my point of view known. I will be more proactive in how I handle problematic situations and focus on what I can influence. This is a long term goal for the end of the year as I know it will take sometime for me to break through this negative habit.

Project Updates

Over the last week I worked on nailing down a proper UI for the Unit Converter project. I am trying out various layouts that would lend themselves to both mobile and desktop. Next week I hope to have a detailed post up including my thought process on the whole thing. Other projects are currently on temporary hold as I make progress with this.

Final Words

I did not get much done last week due to some appointments, but I will be full steam ahead in the coming week. As usual feel free to leave any comments or tweet me @EDavlatian.

Welcome to Tuesday!

I am budding web developer who will be using this blog to document my journey in becoming a professional. I will be making weekly posts every Tuesday evening about things I am working on. I have a couple of mini projects that I will be working on throughout September and beyond. I will be posting updates on these projects as I make progress. You can see the list of projects bellow.

Upcoming Projects

Old Website Redesign

I will be taking an old business website that I developed for Beauty Voyage Salon and Spa and updating it to fit modern standards. The original website was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in 2009.

Unit Converter

This will be a single page unit converting web application. The page will be fully responsive and take advantage of HTML5 application caching. Application caching will allow the page to be usable even when offline.

D3.js Mini Project

Originally this was a project that I started as part of an interview process for a junior web developer position. I want to take it a bit further and make some improvements to what I have done. I also want to explore a couple of data visualization options using new data that I did not have at the time.

Other Things

Other than project updates I will also have a few goals for the month. I will have a separate post for these goals at the start and end of the month. The first such post will go up on September 1.

I will also be making sporadic posts with regards to things not related to my web development journey. These unrelated posts will be labeled for easy filtering.
